Eyebrows were raised in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday after a defendant named Beyoncé told the court that police officers teased her and beat her with books because she was ugly.
Beyoncé Brown was charged with indecent language, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assaulting police.
Brown was eventually fined $1,000 or 10 days for indecent language and $1,000 or 10 days for disorderly conduct. All other charges were withdrawn.
The court heard that on January 20 of this year, the defendant was about to be detained on Beckford Street in downtown Kingston for exposing goods for sale in a 'No Vending Area'.
Brown was to be detained by a male police officer who then sought the assistance of his female colleague to accost the defendant.
That woman constable then told the court that the defendant was placed in a police vehicle to be taken to the Harbour Street Police Post.
According to the woman constable, when the defendant was placed in the vehicle, she made several attempts to open the door to escape.
On her arrival at the police post, the defendant then verbally assaulted the woman constable and continued to behave in a boisterous manner, which caused a disturbance to normal proceedings.
In her defence, Brown pointed to the woman constable and told the court that "she and five officers lick me wid dem book."
She then turned her attention to the male constable and remarked, "Tha short officer deh and him beat me."
Brown later explained that the police officers "tek set pon mi" because she was ugly.
