Florida (Sanford)A man who ran over and killed his daughter as she sat in her wheelchair says he's not sure how it happened.
It happened around 10 a.m. Thursday at a home on McKay Boulevard and Hughes Avenue in Sanford.
Sanford police said 76-year-old Lawrence Jones was pulling into his driveway as his daughter and her caregiver waited outside.
His 51-year-old daughter, Loretta Tomblin, was killed at the scene.
Her caretaker, Veronica Jackson, was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Rescue crews had to work to free her from underneath the truck.
Police originally said Jones may have hit the gas instead of the brake, but Jones said he was trying to go in reverse.
"She started to push the cart out so she could get around my truck. Instead of backing up, the truck went forward and ran right over them," Jones said.
Police spent time after the crash trying to figure out how fast the truck was going.
The force of the collision shattered the wheelchair into pieces.
It will now be up to Jones to try to pick up the pieces. The police chaplain and his pastor were with Jones Thursday afternoon to offer support.
"He obviously is in a state of shock,” said Interim Police Chief Steve Harriett. “This would be a very difficult situation for him to understand why this has happened to him. We're going to be as supportive as we can.”
"It makes me sad," said Gloria Wright, a neighbor. All I can do is pray for him and the other ones. That’s all I can do.”
Jones said he was caring for his daughter after she suffered a stroke.
He said he plans to keep driving so he can visit his other children and grandchildren.
