The Pakistan Government will formally write to Britain for former military ruler Pervez Musharraf's extradition in connection with the Benazir Bhutto assassination case only if the court directed so, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan has said.

Responding to a volley of questions from media persons about the possibility of seeking Musharraf's handover from Britain, Firdous said that the government would follow the court directives in this regard.

"When the court would give a direction, the state would act in accordance with it," The News quoted the minister, as replying when pressed whether the government would approach the British government for Musharraf's extradition.

Firdous expressed the confidence that there would be speedy progress in the case, and the government would assist the court if and when required.

She pointed out that following a court order for issuance of arrest warrants of the former military ruler, the government had ensured its implementation, and would do so in future whenever the court gave directions on the matter.

When asked whether the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) believed that Musharraf had a role in the killing of the party's the then chairperson in a gun-bomb attack in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007, Firdous replied that it was the job of the courts to find out the facts.

Answering a question about the possibility of any agency's role in Benazir's assassination, she said that both the government and the military were answerable to the public, and that they awaited the court judgement in the Benazir murder case.
