A number of US billionaires have pledged at least half of their wealth to charity as part of a campaign launched by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett.

‘The Giving Pledge’ began in June with Gates, his wife Melinda, and Warren Buffett working to persuade the financial elite to part with a minimum of 50 per cent of their fortunes.

Buffett and Gates are looking to raise 456 billion euros with the pair hoping to secure pledges from the 400 existing billionaires in the US.

Warren Buffett, the second richest American worth some 35 billion euros, has said he wants to give away all his fortune.

CNN founder Ted Turner is one of those to sign up to the idea.

As is the Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg.

Philanthropist David Rockefeller is also on board along with the creater of Star Wars George Lucas.

Lucas wants to put his pile into education, which he claims is the “key to the survival of the human race.”
