Trinidad and Tobago`s first female Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, is set to kick-off her inaugural visit to New York today.
PM Persad-Bissessar is set for a meet and greet with Trinidad and Caribbean nationals at Maracas Club in southeast Queens, NY at 6 p.m. today before making her way to Brooklyn for a meeting with her Diaspora.
The PM is set to address nationals at a town hall meeting from 6:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. today at 5 MetroTech, which is in the rear of 10 MetroTech, the main campus of NYU Polytechnic University on Jay Street between Myrtle Avenue and Johnson Street and Tech Place.
Persad-Bissessar is set to meet nationals and answer questions in the Pfizer Auditorium on the first floor of the Dibner Building at 5 MetroTech.
On Sunday, August 15th, Persad-Bissessar will be a special guest at the 2010 Indian Independence Day parade in Manhattan. The Prime Minister will be the guest of honor at the 30th India day parade, organized annually by the Federation of Indian Associations.
She will march alongside Bollywood actress Preity Zinta who will be the parade`s grand marshal, the FIA said in a statement.
`We are delighted to have her as guest of honor this year and we celebrate her election to such a prestigious position in government of a great country. This is yet another milestone that our community in North America should be proud of,` Nirav Mehta, president of FIA, was quoted as saying.
Finance Minister Winston Dookeran will act as prime minister in her absence.
Persad-Bissessar was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 26, 2010 and is the country`s first female Prime Minister. She is the political leader of the United National Congress and leads the People`s Partnership, a coalition of five parties, formed for the general election of 24 May 2010. She was the first woman to serve as attorney general, acting Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition of Trinidad and Tobago. She became Political Leader of the opposition United National Congress in 2010.
