PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — The police here have arrested five suspects and were searching for a sixth, after rescuing a 24-year-old woman and her eight-month-old baby, who had been kidnapped after bandits killed her husband at their home in Freeport, Central Trinidad, on Sunday.

Police said that Nila Seetaram-Ali and her daughter, Aliyah, were found at a house in Carapichaima, in Central Trinidad.

Police said that the young mother, who was married last Sunday, arrived home to discover her 37-year-old husband, Nishard Ali, an accountant dead. His throat had been slit and the house ransacked.

The bandits then bundled her into a vehicle where her eight-month-old daughter was seated and drove off. Relatives said that they later received a call demanding a ransom of TT$100,000 (US$16,660) for their return.

Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner was quoted in the local media on Monday as reiterating the need for the execution of convicted murderers.

"I am so upset about this situation right now. This is the most horrific murder scene I have ever seen and if you see blood inside there. I will dedicate the rest of my political life to fight for implementation of the death penalty.

"I am now convinced more than ever that the murders that are taking place these days are too heinous and too horrendous and evil, and therefore you have to fight evil with evil," he added.
