What is Trichomonas Vaginalis?

Trichomonas Vaginalis (TV or ‘trich’) is an infection caused by a tiny parasite in the vagina and urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder) in both women and men.

How is it passed on?

TV is passed on by unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Many people do not experience any symptoms and sometimes they are so mild that they go unnoticed. Typical signs of infection include:

  • A change in vaginal discharge: this may increase, become thinner, frothy, become green or yellow, or change in smell
  • A discharge from the penis
  • Inflammation, soreness or itching in and around the vagina
  • Pain when peeing in both men and women
  • Pain when having sex

What are the tests and treatments?

A swab will be taken from the vagina or tip of the penis. Sometimes urine may also be taken. TV is easily treated with antibiotics. Your sexual partner should also get treated to avoid re-infection.
