Guyana, CMC - At least one person was killed and 15 others injured after a device exploded in one of the shops near the Stabroek Market today.
Police said that one person is assisting them with their investigations but have not ruled out the possibility that the exploding device was a grenade.
Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Seelall Persaud, confirmed that there had been an explosion and police were carrying out investigations. The identity of the dead man has not been disclosed.
However, media reports said that bomb experts were deployed to the area which was cordoned off and secured by heavily armed police, some on horseback.
“Some of the injured persons ran to the fire station and we started to move them and we sent out a unit here, the constabulary cordoned off the area… Of course, it was chaos here to get the people out,” said Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle.
Those injured were being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
