An executive driver employed to a well-known Jamaican hotel chain was arrested yesterday in connection with a shooting incident at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James, that left two persons wounded.
The Gleaner understands that the executive driver, who is also a licensed firearm holder, was involved in an altercation with another man inside a lottery shop at the airport.
According to reports, sometime after 3:30 p.m., both men were inside the shop - located at the arrival terminal - arguing over a $1,000 note when a tussle began.
The firearm holder allegedly pulled his gun, which went off and discharged a bullet that ricocheted, and hit two other persons inside the shop. Personnel from the airport police post responded to the commotion, and subsequently took the firearm holder into custody and seized his weapon.
The Montego Bay Criminal Investigation Branch is expected to take over investigations into the matter.
Yesterday's shooting took place less than two years after the April 2009 incident in which 22-year-old Stephen Fray took 160 passengers and the crew aboard CanJet charter flight 918 hostage at gunpoint on the tarmac of the same airport.
Within months, Fray was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison.
