Baby among four killed in Clarendon car crash... follow up 2 yesterday's posting

FOUR people — a baby, two women and a man — were killed yesterday when the Honda Civic motor car in which they were travelling crashed into a truck along the Bustamante Highway in Clarendon.

Police said the four were pronounced dead at hospital hours after the crash "300 metres west of Foga Road along the Bustamante Highway close to York Town".

The names of the victims were not released up to press time last night. The car was being driven by one of the women.

It was not clear if the truck driver was injured in the crash.

"The information we are getting is that a Honda motor car was travelling from the direction of Manchester towards Kingston and the truck was travelling in the opposite direction when the crash occurred," said Inspector Gary McKenzie of the Police Traffic Department. Firefighters and the police, who were said to be quick on the scene, had to cut the victims from the motor car.

The death of the four has pushed the number of road fatalities for the year to 28, compared to 33 for the same period last year. However, the police said it was still a major concern as yesterday's crash was the second to record multiple fatalities this year.

"We are very much concerned about these crashes and are warning persons to be more careful on the road," said head of the Traffic Department, Supt Radcliffe Lewis.

Police, in their campaign to clamp down on traffic violations, late last year reported that the bulk of the 4,000 speeding tickets issued between December 15 and yearend had gone to female drivers.
