THE Road Safety Unit (RSU) is reporting that the driver in this morning's bus tragedy in Christiana, Manchester was speeding and that the vehicle was overloaded.

The owner/conductor and three female students of Holmwood Technical High School were killed when the vehicle failed to properly negotiate a corner and slammed into a wall about 8:30 am. Several other passengers have been taken to hospital.

The RSU implored drivers to take greater caution when negotiating the island's roads.

"The RSU again implores all motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads by complying with the posted speed limits as well as driving in accordance with the road and weather conditions," said the unit in a statement this morning.

The RSU said that 81 persons have died on the roads so far this year, which is four less than the 85 recorded in the same period during 2010.
