A dog owner is now planning to take legal action against the police after he said that a team of police officers entered his yard unannounced claiming that they were in pursuit of a wanted man, but when the man wasn't found, instead they shot and killed his dog.
The incident is said to have taken place close to midday last Thursday on Smith Lane in central Kingston.
"You cyah just run inna people yaad, come kill people pet so," the enraged man said.
When THE STAR visited the premises, the dog was seen lying in blood and had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to its neck as the tongue hung from his mouth.
The dead animal was wearing a collar and was securely tied to a drum filled with water.
The residents of the yard explained that after the dog was killed, they immediately expressed their disapproval but that might have enraged the cop as he is said to have threatened to kill a puppy that was also in the yard at the time.
helpless
"A show off dem show off and shot the dog, dem never have no reason fi shoot the dog ... The dog no do dem nothing man, the dog was helpless," an alleged eyewitness said.
The residents say the animal was killed unnecessarily because the cops had earlier passed successfully to go to the back of the premises in search of the man. After they were satisfied that the man wasn't there, they attempted to leave.
It was then that the dog was reportedly shot at point blank rage with a rifle.
Several persons said that while the police were on their way out of the yard, one of the officers told his colleague to wait for the animal's owner to attend to the pet so that they could leave.
However, the officer became impatient and disregarded his colleague's advice and tried to pass. It is said that the dog advanced towards the impatient police officer who in turn shot it.
THE STAR understands that the spent shell was later removed from the scene. The Kingston Central CIB are conducting an investigation into the matter.
